Music Roundup - 2016
2016 has come to an end and successfully I've continued my full-fledged music reviews across the regional languages. The number of album reviewed in this blog is comparatively same as that of last year while Tamil and Telugu dominated in counts as basically, I'm fluent in this two south Indian languages. Once again Tamil and Kannada industry churned out interesting albums this year and surprisingly Malayalam music industry remains low key while Hindi film industry certainly has some enticing albums but still lags behind when compared to southern music scenario. Telugu audience as well as industry continues to embrace commercial song format with an occasional respite from few composers who wish to experiment.
Tamil:
Tamil movie industry witnessed high-quality albums released in 2016 when compared to other languages and consistently young music directors dropped their best this year. Music composer of the year is shared by two composers: Santosh Narayanan and Imman. Santosh Narayanan gave prolific music output in Irudhi Suttru, Kabali, Kodi, Kaashmora and Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum. Though Imman didn't give complete solid album, it's very difficult to shrug away his melodies this year and the composer has the knack in churning out soulful Ilayaraja'esque melody tracks with aplomb consistency.
AR Rahman continues to push boundaries with Acham Enbadhu Madamaiyada and 24 while Ilayaraja gave hard hitting soundtrack for Bala's Thaarai Thappattai. Ghibran is relatively low key this year with just one album in his kitty while Anirudh delivers wonderful Rum and an average Remo. Harris Jayaraj remains to lie well within his musical universe and continues to tweaking his limited repertoire sounds this year also with Irumugan and Singam 3. Yuvan Shankar Raja makes his comeback with the brilliant album Nenjam Marapathillai.
The young composers who steal the Tamil music Industry this year is undeniably Niva K Prasanna, Sean Roldan and Darbuka Siva for their Zero, Joker and Kidaari respectively.

Hindi:
Amit Trivedi continues his splendid work in 2016 also with Fitoor, Udta Punjab and Dear Zindagi, However the veteran trio Shankar Eshaan Loy easily scores the best composer of the year with single solid exceptional album Mirzya and the composer trio showcased their complete potential in this folk filled soundtrack. A R Rahman's Mohenjodaro, despite the quality album, songs had far lesser reach among the people while Ram Sampath dropped in wonderful Raman Raghav 2. Pritam easily scored with ear-friendly album Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and ends the year on high note with folksy Dangal while Vishal Shekhar had a brilliant run this year from Sultan to Befikre. Clinton Cerejo made his debut as a composer with the musical Jugni and continues his prolific output with Teen and Kahaani 2 also.

Telugu:
Telugu Music industry is dominated by Thaman and Devi Sri Prasad as usual and they continue to regurgitate their usual annoying commercial templates and for inexplicable reasons, Telugu audience continues to patronize the albums from this so called top composers in Telugu. Ghibran, one of the highly inventive composers in Tamil, surprisingly align his music to the commercial formats resulting in the underwhelming output from the composer in Babu Bangaram and Hyper. However Gopi Sundar continues his fantastic albums in Telugu with Majnu, Seethamma Andhalu Ramayya Sitralu and to some extent in Oopiri, which makes him the composer of the year in Telugu. Navneeth Sundar made brilliant debut in Telugu with Guppedantha Prema while Vivek Sagar produces sparkling music in Pelli Choopulu and Sheesh Mahal. Vishal ChandraSekhar and Hip Hop Tamizha made their presence felt with Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Katha and Dhruva respectively.

Malayalam Music Scenario is relatively low key when compared to spectacular music from the industry previous year. Bijibal and Gopi Sundar, two prolific composers from the industry has very few albums to offer this year. Sooraj S Kurup made a fantastic debut with Vallem Thetti Pulleem Thetti while multi-composer soundtrack works beautifully for Kismath. M Jayachandran delivered brilliant sincere classical soundtrack Kamboji. Sachin Warrier, singer turned composer shows his finesse in Aanandam.

After Tamil, Kannada music Industry witnessed spectacular music quality this year and compared to previous year, I was able to listen to considerable Kannada songs this year. Charan Raj is a undeniably composer of the year and the composer delivered two fine soundtracks this year Godhi Banna Sadharna Mykaatu and Pushpaka Vimana. The diverse range of songs in both of these soundtracks is ample proof for this composer's finesse while Ajaneesh Loknath continues to dominate commercial soundtrack this year from Akira to Srikanta while Arjun Janya delivered the fitting soundtrack for Mungaru Male Sequel.
