Music Review (Tamil): Master

Music Review (Tamil): Master
Music Composer: Anirudh Ravichander

Anirudh extends his Marana Mass/Chumma Kizhi structured song and tries to milk its success with the gibberish lyrics threw in by Gana Balachander in Vaathi coming. The hook bit is definitely catchy and easy dance portion but overall it turns out to be a pedestrian listen mainly because of its overused tone especially in the past two albums of Anirudh. Andha Kanna Paathakka is in lines of Tharam Maara single in terms of tune but Anirudh did exceptional work with an intriguing synth sounds in the arrangements supported by Keba Jeremiah's guitar. Though Vignesh Shivn's lyrics pointed at heroine/ generally female gaze on the protagonist, Anirudh roped in Yuvan Shankar Raja and he delivers adequately. The tune is tailor-made for Anirudh's vocals going by the composer's earlier works.

Kutti story is easily best of the album with its colloquial lyrics by Arun Raja Kamaraj and Vijay delivering it big time with his casual tone which perfectly suits with the on-screen persona of Vijay. Anirudh kept the tune simple with the catchy rhythm beats and the Tanglish lyrics reminds us of the Anirudh's viral Kolaveri. Quit Pannuda is a refreshing composition from the composer. The song starts off with a trance-like sound indicating the intoxicated state and turns into a lovely sax solo before plunges into an energetic soft rock towards the second half. The minor quibble with respect to Anirudh vocals aside, the track is a winner definitely. Polakkattum Para Para starts with Vijay Sethupathi's dialogue and veers into the rustic folk song in the vocals of Santosh Narayanan and the singer easily sails off the tune with occasional thunderous laughs. Anirudh spruces up the arrangements with the consistent use of folk percussions and the tune may blend well with the visuals. Arivu and Anirudh are in stunning form with Vaathi Raid and the lyrics by Arivu is lit especially the timely usage of Vaathi 'Raid'. The astounding energy with which Arivu delivered deserves special mention and the track definitely matches the vibes Neruppu da created during its release. Arivu's rap forms the backbone of this heady and an exhilarating song. Master album features the two short tracks beat of Master and Pona Pogattum. Both the tracks are strictly situational while the former instrumental track dominated by percussions scores over the Vinith's emotional track Pona Pogattum.

Verdict: Anirudh easily delivered his best among his recent outings for the mass films with the vibrant soundtrack led by Vaathi Raid. Though the fact that predominant tracks in the album are sung by the composers itself and also no female singers is a bit of dampener, Anirudh ensures that the album is a joyous ride with the highly engaging set of tracks.

My Rating: 8/10

Pick of the Album: Vaathi Raid, Kutti Story, Quit Pannuda

Music Review (Tamil): Sarkar

Music Review (Tamil): Sarkar
Music Composer: AR Rahman

Simtaangaaran makes us wonder, AR Murugadoss unable to get listenable track even with Rahman onboard for the movie and Vivek's lyrics makes this song even more terrible listen. The only solace being the Aparna Narayanan's brief verse and Kamalakar's flute portions intermittently. Oru Viral Puratchi's rock anthem easily works with the Keba Jeremiah's brilliant guitar strums and Vivek's hard-hitting lyrics taking a dig at the current political scenario of Tamilnadu should easily create enough spark similar to Mersal controversy. Rahman's neat arrangements, especially in the interludes, make this enjoyable in Rahman's vocals. Top Tucker is another mediocre track where once again Vivek's lyrics sabotage the techno track while Mohit Chauhan tries to elevate the song to some extent but still lyrics is a huge letdown. OMG Ponnu sounds like another Maacho but again Vivek's experimentation with lyrics backfired despite Sid Sriram and Jonita Gandhi's peppy rendition. CEO in the house is another techno-laden track bogged down once again by the lyrics and tune also strictly functional one from the composer.

Verdict: Thought Mersal was Rahman's weakest till now, but Sarkar trumps that easily with the dreadful lyrics and pretty functional tunes.

My Rating: 6.5/10

Pick of the Album: Oru Viral Puratchi

Music Review(Tamil) - Kaththi

Music Review(Tamil) - Kaththi
Music Composer: Anirudh

Pakkam Vandhu, Anirudh- Hip hop tamizha combo comes back for their regular techno party song  adorned with interesting nadhaswaram and Hip hop tamizha fares exceptional than Anirudh with his rap portions nevertheless song didn't pave the way for multiple listens. Next comes already leaked song selfie pulla, starts with catchy kuthu guitar riffs and Madhan Karky's use of colloquial lyrics will allure new age internet youths for sure. Vijay and Sunidhi chauhan vocals makes the required impact for this middling kuthu song. Vishal Dadlani join hands with Anirudh for the second time in Aathi and did a wothy job with his vocals for the guitar dominated energetic song.Composer handles the mandolin deftly in the first interlude and Hip Hop Tamizha rap portions are catchy enough to make this song hit. Anirudh tries multi genre fusion of folk, kuthu and carnatic in Paalam backed by the brass band orchestration for folk and kuthu one and regular instruments for carnatic portions. Both Shwetha Mohan and Shankar Mahadevan are splendid in singing. Yaar petra magano nee, a pathos by K J Yesudas has a lovely tune backed by guitars, wonderful flute in first interlude and other instruments sets the required tone for the song. Anirudh came back with wonderful theme tracks. Bad eyes Villain theme is simply mind blowing for its Veena and flute usage and nicely mixed the splashes of water sounds.Second one, Kathi theme rides on energizing guitar enhanced by sword clank sound  and chanting of Kathi towards the end.

Verdict: Anirudh came back after line of middling albums and good that he uses other singers rather than singing himself. Sure Kathi will satiate vijay fans.

My Rating: 7.5/10

Pick of the Album: Yaar petra, Aathi, Theme tracks
