Music Review (Tamil) : Aambala

Music Review (Tamil) : Aambala
Music Composer: Hip Hop Tamizha

Hip Hop Tamizha's ebullient rendition is endorsed by accordion bits, engaging guitar strummings, foot tapping drums and not to forget brass sections in  Aye Aye. The sounds around Aye Aye hook is interesting though. Overall Aadhi opens the album in his own style. Madras to Madurai apart from the smartly done mixing and Kuthu beats, the interlude is closely similar to one of the nedunchalai song and also tune is monotonous. However rendition by lead singers (Kailash Kher and Vishnu priya) and punchy EDM makes one to shake along with the tune shrouding those glitches. Another EDM number Pazhagikalam seems to be an overdose for a soundtrack, however as a separate track, Hip Hop Tamizha totally owns this song with his energetic rendition and thumping electronic sounds. Expected Album will be full of EDM and party numbers but to the surprise Aadhi gave much needed digression to the soundtrack through next two songs. Vaa Vaa Vennila, has coolness written all over it, Vocals by Mohit Chauhan, and Amrita or background beats, or uber cool electric guitar usage adorns the overall song well. Another track which enhances the overall album is Yaar Enna Sonnalum, brilliant concoction of Strings and other assorted sounds dominated by pounding beats at the background ably supported by Kutle Khan, Anthony Dasan and Varun.

Verdict: Overall engaging film debut by Aadhi (Hip Hop Tamizha)

My rating:7.25/10

Pick of the Album: Yaar Enna Sonnalum, Vaa Vaa Vennila, Aye Aye

Music Review: Nanbenda

Music Review: Nanbenda
Music Composer : Harris Jayaraj

Dappankuthu Mettula, has undeniable Aathangara Orathula flavour mainly because of Gaana Bala vocals spruced up by Ujjainee Roy rendition. Tune is a tepid effort from Harris which ends abruptly however composer nails the interludes mixing the electronic sounds with thavil. In Enai marubadi Enai marubadi, Harris went back to his templatized tune arranged with his stock of beats and prolific Vijayprakash behind the mic to save the languishing tune. Nee Sunno Nee Moono, though tune is again similar to his previous tracks, Andrea Jeremiah and Richard's vocals add enough punch to make this song works. Brass section and strings(banjo or mandolin?) in the second interlude is exceptional. Neerambal Poove, short sweet track relies mainly on Arjun Menon vocals meanders into mediocre rap in the middle by MC Vikey.  Thamarai makes her presence in the soundtrack with her unique choice of words. Oorellam Unnai Kandu is an instant winner in the soundtrack with its enchanting chorus portion followed by Unni Krishnan's and Bombay Jayashree's effortless rendition ably supported by Vairamuthu's lyrics. Harris too complements the carnatic raaga based tune with brilliant orchestration and arrangements. Thaene Thaene Sendhene, breezy melody in Haricharan's voice has Harris Jayaraj stamp all over the song from arrangements, flow of tune beats and everything. Overall passable sombre track.

Verdict: Harris mired himself with his templatized sounds and resists from coming out of his comfy zone. I think music charts and radio play will portray different picture as usual.

My rating:7/10

Music Round up 2014

Tamil:

Compared to hindi and telugu, quality of tamil music in 2014 is splendid with lot of albums with novelty and young composers like Santosh narayanan, Imman, Ghibran and quite a few debutants marks their presence. Composer of the year is shared by two persons, Santosh Narayanan and Imman. Santosh Narayanan churned out blockbusters in all 4 albums (Cuckoo, Jigarthanda, Madras and Enakkul oruvan) delivered by him. Imman too gave 3 solid albums Jeeva, Kayal and Oru oorla rendu raja. Malayalam:
It's good that i listened to lot of malayalam songs compared to last year and musical qualities are good as their movies too. According to me composer of the year is Shaan Rahman who gave brilliant Om shanthi Oshaana in the year start and delectable melodies in Ormayundo Ee mukham towards the end of the year. As a complete soundtrack, I liked Neha Nair's Iyobinte Pusthakam although only three tracks (excluding BGM pieces) in that album, quality and orchestration is top notch.

Music Review (Tamil) : Idam Porul Eval

Music Review (Tamil) : Idam Porul Eval
Music Composer: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Athuvana Kaattuku, stellar opener for the album in the vocals of Yuvan shankar raja. His rendition cum orchestration especially gloomy guitar riffs and drums is tandem with the mood of the song. Lyrics by Vairamuthu is again top notch as in other Seenu Ramasamy movies which are quite thoughtful. Eerakaathe, with eclectic mix of intriguing sounds from the song start, occasional whistling, tribal humming blends  and understated strings in the background blends perfectly well. In addition to that Sendhidass rustic vocals complemented by playful tone of Anitha makes this song another winner in that soundtrack.

Athuvana Kaattuku came in another form as Endha Vazhi with different lyrics and Yuvan slightly modified orchestration in certain postions but mood of the song is intact in this version also. Vaikom Vijayalakshmi's vocals apt for this song and she hardly fails to deliver these genre. Kondaatamae, another melody despite sincere rendition by Sriram Parthasarathy and interesting interludes (especially second one with flute and melodica?), tune fails to enchant the listeners for five minutes. Kurunthogai, in the pitch perfect vocals of V V prasanna and Sonia, is enticing in many aspects be the lyrics (vairamuthu nails this one with many tamil literature names and poets) or interesting sounds in the prelude and interludes.Vaiyambatti, another tailor made folk song for Anthony dasan and Priyadarshini, once again yuvan's arrangement and instrument sounds stands apart in an otherwise standard tune.

Verdict: Yuvan's most captivating album after Moondru Per Moondru Kadhal, Seenu Ramasamy's musical sense along with Vairamuthu's lyrics makes this album best album for yuvan after series of debacles.

My rating: 8/10

Pick of the Album: Athuvana Kaattuku, Kurunthogai, Eerakaathe

Music Review (Tamil): Kaaki Sattai

Music Review (Tamil): Kaaki Sattai
Music Composer: Anirudh

I'm so cool, with Anirudh voice heard in similar tune umpteen number of times makes this song somewhat laborious listen. However Anirudh's techno elements infused with sudden drums, flute and konnakol are the surprising entry in this track. Akin to the previous song, title song also lacks punchy tune however Anirudh compensate with his rock based arrangement, Vishal Dadlani behind the mic to support Anirudh with his usual verve and occasional siren, walkie talkie sound mix. Next comes the winner of the album Kadhal kan Kattuthe, where both lead singers Shakthishree Gopalan and Anirudh with their effortless rendition and Anirudh progressive tune mixed with Accordion guitar adorned with flute and veena bits makes this an arresting listen. Kattikida is Anthony Dasan's show all the way with Anirudh techno elements mixing along with Thavil touches makes this song above routine folk fare. Shake that, another routine Anirudh number with hip hop sounds offer nothing new. Both instrumentals Kaaki Sattai theme extension of title song and trooper theme are short and ends without creating much impact.

Verdict: Barring one melody Kaaki Sattai is usual Anirudh Album and he confined to his forte for the remaining tracks. Better Anirudh should opt for other talented singers in the industry rather than singing himself for most of the songs.

My rating: 7/10

Pick of the Album: Kadhal Kan Kattudhe, Title Song, I'm so cool

Music Review (Tamil): Vellai Kara Durai

Music Review (Tamil): Vellai Kara Durai
Music Composer : D Imman

Ammadi Un Azhaghu, pleasant tune sung with earnest effort by Sathya prakash nevertheless orchestration has deja vu flavours from Imman's previous works. Kaakaa Muttai, folk track and Imman uses the instruments associated with that genre. Despite Vaikom Vijayalakshmi's spirited rendition, tune is not catchy enough to clasp the listeners till the end. Imman brings stellar singers Haricharan and Shreya Ghoshal for the melody called Koodha Kaathu and they are splendid with the vocals. Imman's orchestration and interludes appeals most in an otherwise humdrum tune. Album ends with another ordinary track Nadigar Thilagam in Krishnamoorthy's vocals except for some interesting brass section in the interludes. Brass Band by Maxwell is enticing compared to the other songs in the soundtrack.

Verdict: Imman's Vellaikara Durai seems to be perfunctory soundtrack wrapped up very quickly without any composer's fine touch.

My rating:6.5/10

Pick of the Album:  Ammadi Un Azhaghu, Koodha kaathu, Brass band

Music Review (Tamil) : Vai Raja Vai

Music Review (Tamil) : Vai Raja Vai
Music Composer: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Move your body, typical party mix track with all elements associated with EDM music and Ilayaraja's voice too appeared processed to suit for the party track. Besides all these efforts, song is pretty ordinary. Naam Vazhndhidum prelude portion is simply superb with cello and other assorted sounds but as tune progresses track turns out to be another hip hop track dominated by electronic sounds. However Hip hop tamizha's rap portion engages though compared to Yuvan Shankar Raja's vocals. Pachchai Vanna typical yuvan styled melody with interesting interludes and sounds in the second half. The song would have created more impact with well established singer. Pookkamazh another track with electronic sounds which are sure enough foot tapping and Tanvi Shah's peppy rendition goes along with the party mood. Vandha Kadha, another mundane tune in the voice of Gaana bala and good that Yuvan deviates from the routine orchestration style for Gaana bala songs.

Verdict: Vai Raja Vai, album high on electronic sounds and party tracks is strictly for the listeners who enjoy those genre and for others Vai Raja Vai is not Yuvan's come back album.

My rating:6.5/10

Pick of the Album: Naam Vazhndhidum, Pachchai Vanna

Music Review (Telugu) : Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju

Music Review (Telugu) : Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju
Music Composer: Gopi Sundar

Maharba, typical sufi styled track with tabla dominates throughout the track adorned with lovely strings in the interludes. Vocals by K S chitra along with uncredited male voice in the mid way is an additional asset to the track and she took the track to another level with her nuanced rendition at certain portions. Gopi Sundar utilizes guitar and veena (or sliding guitar) in an intriguing way in Yenno Yenno results in perfect soothing ambience. Icing to the cake is the sweet vocals by Karthik and chinmayee which complements the composers effective orchestration and chorus too gels well with the track. The tune in the second half especially 2:10 to 3.15 is more engaging thanks for the superb rendition by lead singers. Gopi ropes another talented singer Haricharan to deliver the solo Variche Prema with tabla and clapping adorned with strings in the arrangement. Song which starts like emotional slow song but as song proceeds tune turns enticing. Gathama is purely Priya himesh's show and the lady impresses with her mesmerizing rendition enhanced by lovely guitar strums by Gopi sundar. Gopi Sundar ends the album with contrasting track Choti Jindagi, hard rock guitar mixed with drumming in an effectual way and Hiranmayi pulls off the song with her punchy vocals in tandem with the mood of the song.

Verdict: Gopi Sundar's telugu debut brings extremely impressive sound for the telugu audiences and Sharvanand gets two album this year which is high on musical quality.

My Rating: 8/10

Pick of the Album: Gathama, Yenno Yenno, Maharba

Music Review (Telugu) : Mukunda

Music Review (Telugu) : Mukunda
Music Composer: Mickey J Meyer

Chesededo with its inspiring optimistic lyrics by sirivennela is an exuberant anthemic tune orchestrated within the realm of rock genre. Vocals portions handed over to Rahul Nambiar who renders with sufficent verve however tune evokes memories of similar type of compositions by Rahul raj in other telugu movies. Daredumdadum has simple tune with interesting title hook interspersed with captivating orchestration especially flute in the second interlude. The vocal processing in Mickey J meyer voice let down the fun at some places but compensated by female lead Sai Shivani. Chala Bagundhi, soothing sing along tune mixed with brilliant guitar riffs in tandem with the tune. Haricharan adds another song to his splendid 2014 repertoire with chala Bagundhi and Mickey infuses contrasting sounds in the interludes which gels considerably well with tune. Mickey J Meyer ropes ever reliable Chitra for the sweet enjoyable  track Gopikamma and same combo gave last year Seethamma vaakitlo title song however duo unable to repeat the magic this time. Song beats also reminiscent of SVSC song. Arere Chandrakala, peppy romantic foot tapping number sung well by Karthik and Sai Shivani and song maintains the momentum from start till end. Thanks to the foot tapping beats. Expectations rise when one sees swetha pandit - Mickey J Meyer combo and in Mukunda too combo delivers lovable melody. (still Nenani Neevani from Kotha bangaru Lokam is best). Shwetha pandit sounds sweet in this serene melody Nandalala and arrangements by Mickey too quite enticing complements well with vocals. The theme instrumental is energetic which is quite contrast with the mood of the album but ends abruptly without creating much impact.

Verdict: Mickey J Meyer delivers another best album which is high on feel good quotient in his usual way for Srikanth Addala.

My rating:7.5/10

Pick of the Album: Nandala, Chala Bagundhi, Daredumdadum

Music Review (Tamil) : Darling

Music Review (Tamil) : Darling
Music Composer: GV Prakash Kumar

Anbe Anbe, soporific melodious tune reminiscent of composer's own compositions interspersed with occasional brilliant guitar strums and drums. GV Prakash rendition stands apart in an otherwise mundane track. Sattena Idi mazhai, another passable party track with electronic sounds in GV Prakash and Megha's vocals ends bland despite lively rendition by lead singer.

Soundtrack turns into interesting with Vandha mala, amusing lyrics, instantly catchy tune, energetic vocals by Arun Raja Kamaraj and Gaana Bala. The brass sections, drums and guitar portions aided with dialogues makes this song enticing. Next come another gorgeous melody Unnale with impressive violins and acoustic drums in interludes backed by chorus. Shankar Mahadevan and Shreya Goshal in the vocals, hardly anything can go wrong in singing and they nail the haunting tune in their own way. Good to see that Shankar Mahadevan returns to tamil soundtrack this year in many albums. Another proficient singer Harini rules the next melodious track in the album Un Vizhigalil with her mellifluous voice. GV goes minimal in the orchestration with pleasant piano sounds and flute in the interludes to support Harini's soft rendition. The dead are back is gloomy theme track mixed with sounds associated with horror films backed by chorus and strings section.

Verdict: GV Prakash Kumar returns back with engaging melodious album after average Irumbu Kuthirai.

My rating:7/10

Pick of the Album: Unnale, Un Vizhigalil, Vandha mala

Music Review (Telugu): Gaddam Gang

Music Review (Telugu): Gaddam Gang
Music Review: Achu

My dear sweety, is an engaging jazzy piece with interesting use of trumpets cum drums led orchestration especially second interlude. The vocals by Achu, mix of funky and breezy rendition aids well the tune. Vathava vadhantava, is shoddy compared to  Come na come from Soodhu Kavvum however sprightly rendition by the Tamil composer saves this song from laborious listen. Kasu Cashu dubbu, telugu equivalent of Kasu Panam from Soodhu kavvum and in this song Achu manages to hold the listener with catchy choli ke peeche kya hey hook and funny lyrics accentuates the further craziness of the song. Achu also uses the background sounds from the original. Achu returns to another jazzy fusion in Mama douser's Telugu version Chirigi Chattayindhi. Both tune and M M Manasi voice along with jazz genred instruments work well in tandem results in another eccentric song. Gaddam Gang theme is energetic on its own way but when compared to splendid Tamil version theme this one is slight disappointment.

Verdict: Achu considerably did well and came out with tunes with enough wackiness but still soodhu Kavvum tunes are better.Comparisons are inevitable in remakes and that too with standards set by Santosh Narayanan.

My rating:7.5/10

Music Review (Telugu) : Chakkiligintha

Music Review (Telugu) : Chakkiligintha
Music Composer : Mickey J Meyer

Avoid girls, with heavy drums, few interesting guitar bits in the background and violin towards the end has hummable tune in the vocals of Siddharth, Aditya, Anudeep. Lyrics seems to be advice for the newly joined college guys about girls. Baby my lover, is a surprise in terms of singing, the voice range shown by Mickey J Meyer is laudable and tune also groovy enough to make the song listenable. Haricharan and Sai Shivani rules the simple catchy Chakkiligintey song. The template of the tune and beats throughout the song seems to be pretty familiar nevertheless decent track in the album. Idivarakey, engaging dulcet by Karthik has some nice usage of keys and beautiful strings section in second interlude. Mayo Mayo has enticing sounds with Aditya and Ramya Behera rendered with verve nevertheless song turns into laborious listen in the mid way. O Kshanama is another free flowing melody is a passable listen with vocals of Ramya Behera and she sounds different and sweet compared to previous song.

Verdict: Mickey J Meyer creates the another listenable soundtrack without any awestruck offbeat songs and also not a bad album in any means.

My rating:7/10

Music Review (Hindi) : PK

Music Review (Hindi) : PK
Music Composer: Shantanu Moitra, Ajay-Atul, Ankit Tiwari

Ajay Atul's Tharki Chokri is a folkish tune sung with enough ecstacy by Swaroop Khan and chorus however arrangements reminiscent of heard before templates with occasional brass section being the novelty additions to the flow of the song. In Nanga Punga Dost , Shreya Goshal enjoys singing the unhurried tune with rhyming lyrics by swanand kirkire. The violin solos and the guitar strums in the arrangement is particularly beautiful in tandem with the easy go mood of the song. Chaar Kadam, is a breezy ballad song in lines of Parineeta's Piyu bole (by same composer) and many other songs however vocals by Shaan and soothing singing by Shreya Goshal makes it listenable despite deja-vu factor associated with the song. Love is a waste of time is also given the similar treatment like Chaar Kadam with Violin- accordion combo stands out apart in orchestration. Singing by Sonu Nigam and Shreya goshal apt for the pleasant retro tune. Bhagawan Hai Kahan Re Tu, except for some progreesive interludes is laborious listen despite earnest rendition by Sonu Nigam. Ankit Tiwari's guest composition Dil Darbadar's tune confined to the Aashique 2 territory results in the bland song of the soundtrack except for some nice touches by string instrument (mandolin I think).

Verdict: Rajkumar Hirani's PK has some sweet compositions tainted by the deja vu feelings associated with the songs.

My rating:7/10

Pick of the Album: Nanga Punga Dost, Love is a waste of time, Tharki Chokri

Music Review (Tamil): Isai

Music Review (Tamil): Isai
Music Composer: S J Suryah

Puthandin, starts with thumping beats and energetic guitar but as the song progresses, it becomes more tedious listen because of S J Surya's vocals and also middling tune without any imagination. Atho Vanile Nila is a passable listen with simple tune prodded by Chinmayi and Karthik's reliable vocals. A cameo by Deva is a pleasant surprise and gives much digression in an otherwise monotonous tune. Dirty Dancing, techno kuthu song in Shalini singh vocals is another mediocre song with repugnant lyrics which can be avoided. The best of the album is  Isai Veesi, a hummable melody garnished with watery sounds in Chinmayi's mesmerizing vocals. Nee Poiyaa, by VijayYesudas is a pathos number has tune which is interesting only in parts but listenable only because of earnest rendition by Yesudas. Among the three themes, She is his piano theme appeals most despite sincere controlled rendition by Chinmayi in all the themes.

Verdict: Isai is an unimpressive debut as a music director for S J Surya.

My Rating: 6.5/10

Pick of the album: Isai Veesi, Nee Poiyaa, She is his piano theme

Music Review (Tamil) : Lingaa

Music Review (Tamil) : Lingaa
Music Composer: A R Rahman

En Mannava, a slow bollywood type of duet with interesting interludes including classical pieces with sitar, percussions etc for vairamuthu's period lyrics albeit tune is much ordinary. Aditya paul's sweet vocals is ably supported by Srinivas. Another anthemic song by Rahman, Indiane Vaa with high pitched vocals evokes memories of many similar compositions by Rahman itself. Vairamuthu's inspirational lyrics to bring back unity in water problem is apt. The pathos Unmai Orunaal Vellum by Haricharan is a heavily average track except for interludes and tune unable to clasp the listener till end despite much effort by singer.
Soundtrack's best are the remaining two songs. Rahman chooses retro gangster styled intro Oh Nanba for superstar Rajinikanth with superb brass section and Arabic styled percussions throughout the song infused with techno elements. Moreover SPB's energetic rendition blends well with the Aaryan's rap portions and chorus. It's quite after a long time, Rajini's intro song appeals most than other songs in the soundtrack. The next best song is Mona Gasolina, which has quite eccentric tune with catchy lyrics by Madhan Karky and singers Mano, Tanvi shah and Neeti Mohan added more craziness to the song with their rendition. Mano came back with a interesting song for Rahman and Mozart added techno sounds with appealing thavil and other assorted sounds especially chords section.

Verdict: Two songs by Rahman elevates the overall level of the superstar's soundtrack.

My rating:7.5/10

Pick of the Album: Oh nanba, Mona gasolina, En Mannava

Music Review (Tamil): Kayal

Music Review (Tamil): Kayal
Music Composer: D Imman

Kayal opens with melancholy track Yengirundhu vandhaayo penned by yugabharathi rendered in pitch perfect manner by ever reliable Shreya Goshal. Imman's proclivity towards violin is apparent by the deftness in handling the first interlude and towards the end.Composer mixes the tabla and particularly high pitched flute solos to set the mood of the song. Another slow killer song Yenga Pulla Irukka with grand piano orchestration garnished with mellifluous flute, soothing violins, enchanting chorus portions and culminates with increased tempo. Balram impeccable and lucid rendition adds value to the yugabharathi lyrics. Unna ippa paakanum, fast paced melody starts with catchy guitar adorned by brass section in first interlude, percussion and occasional chimes. Overall Imman's arrangement is top notch and singers Haricharan and Vandana Srinivasan (bad that only Imman and GVP recognises her) sounds pleasing as always.

Yen aala Paaka Poren, mellow duet arranged neatly with soft guitar in prelude trailed by ghatam and surprise aalaap by K G Ranjith in the latter half makes this song enticing. Imman's tune is cakewalk for Shreya Goshal and lady aces it in her own way. Haricharan is on a roll this year and in second track in kayal, Paravaya parakurom too he excels in singing. Imman's arrangement with impressive drums throughout the song, violin parts, ghatam, subtle guitar and other sounds easily surpasses the passable tune. Prabhu solomon soundtrack is incomplete without a countryside folk song but Deeyalo Deeyalo is not as captivating as Prabhu-Imman's previous track record in this genre. However eclectic sounds with clarinet and other sounds by Imman is enticing. Orathanadu Gopu sounds apt for this genre.Soundtrack's final Koodave varamaathiri with minimal orchestration and Aaromale hangover is apparent may be because of high pitched singing by the same lead singer Alphons Joseph.

Verdict: Prabhu Solomon-Imman combo scores hat-trick with Kayal and Imman gives one of the best soundtrack of 2014. Imman's orchestration is neat without overshadowing the lyrics which is rare among the contemporary music scenario.

Music Review (Tamil) : Kaadu

Music Review (Tamil) : Kaadu
Music Composer: K

Ettu thikkum, energetic song rides mainly on thumping percussion throughout the song sung with enough spirit by Anand Aravindhakshan. Composer K's penchant for strings are evident in the orchestration. Onna pathi, a laid back relaxed tune handled by Haricharan with his exquisite singing and composer garnished the song with flute and motley of soothing sounds to set the right mood for the song. Oororam folkish song about village people by Anitha Karthikeyan and Jayamurthy in their respective versions is a passable run of the mill tune filled with austere sounds confined to the genre of the song. Uchi Malai Kaadu too folky tune by Maghizhini Manimaraan comparatively better than previous songs in the same genre because of the enticing sounds throughout the song and deftly handled interludes for the folk song. Uchi Malai kadu comes in another version with same orchestration except for the lead vocals by Vaikom Vijayalakshmi is equally good. Uyire, best song in the soundtrack  is a pleasing, neatly arranged tune by K starts with beautiful string section and interludes. Madhu Iyer did a splendid job with her vocals.

Verdict: Composer K delivers another album similar to Mahabalipuram where melodies stand apart among the other songs.

Pick of the Album: Uyire, Onna pathi, Uchi Malai Kaadu

Music Review (Tamil) : Anegan

Music Review (Tamil) : Anegan
Music Composer: Harris Jayaraj

Anegan opens up with Aathadi Aathadi relaxing folkish composition using minimal orchestration native ghatam, lilting guitar at the start with lovely dosage of strings and piano. Singers Abhay Jodhpur, Dhanush, Tippu and especially Bavatharini takes the spotlight with their vocals in this soothing composition and Harris adorned this with his usual gibberish in the course of the song despite song leaves the strong reminisce of Innum konjam Neram from Maryan. Dhanush, Marana Gana Viji and Naveen Madhav's energetic rustic vocals delivered the Madras Kuthu track Danga Maari Oothari effectively and Rokesh's hilarious lyrics is instantly catchy. Harris usage of Trumpet and Nadhaswaram in the second interlude is a nice additional touch. This is one of the few songs where dhanush excels in singing.

Harris came back to his repertoire of melodies with Thodu Vaanam which is interesting in parts like catchy chorus along with certain nifty touches by Hariharan. Soft rock with hip hop elements in the second interlude deserves the special mention however sombre tune is a drwaback. Roja Kadale flows with trance rhythmic composition sprightly sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Chinmayi supported by Sunidhi Chauhan. Harris confined to his dominion without any experimentation except for slight tabla fusion results in passable melody. Deivangal Ingae again replete with Harris touches all over the song with slight infusion of veena (or guitar riffs sounds like veena) and Sriram Parthasarathy delivers his part splendidly. YOLO (You only live once) upbeat compostion with medley of instruments like drums, trumpet, rhythmic beats etc  with the help of line of singers Shail Hada, Ramya NSK, Richard and Vicky achieved the intent of the song. Youthful compostion overall.

Verdict: Overall, Harris delivers the listenable album despite the deja-vu flavours in the melodies. However the album is not a humdrum material like his recent albums.

Pick of the Album: Danga Maari Oothari, Aathadi Aathadi, Thodu Vaanam

Music Review (Malayalam): Ormayundo Ee Mukham

Music Review (Malayalam): Ormayundo Ee Mukham
Music Composer: Shaan Rahman

Aaromale, in Shaan Rahman vocals itself is an exuberant free flowing song with likeable tune and interesting sounds strictly confined to the forte of composer. ooh ooh humming portions gels well with the song. Chayunnavo, second song in Shaan Rahman vocals with exciting guitar portions and interesting drums aside, is more like a typical party songs from bollywood composer.

Vineeth srinivasan - Shaan Rahman combo turns the soundtrack into awesome with high on melody. In Doore Doore Vineeth's relaxing vocals is accompanied by soft rock guitar and gentle drumming for the lovable tune despite being short. The reprise version of the song by Rinu Rezak is considerably more soothing because of the minimal orchestration only with piano and lady carries the song forward with ease. Another winner of the soundtrack track is undeniably Ee Mizhikalin with its instantly likeable tune in the brilliant Vineeth and Mrithula warrior vocals. The highlight of the song being the strings section especially violin by cochin strings and apt drums. The last song of the soundtrack is breezy Payye Payye tune handled well by K S Harishankar. But the real star of the track being the flautist who delivers cracking solos especially in the second interlude and throughout the song is ably supported by tabla.

Verdict: Shaan Rahman, after Ohm Shanthi Oshaana delivers another soundtrack to please the listeners who loves melodies.

My rating: 7.5/10

Pick of the album: Ee Mizhikalin, Doore Doore, Payye Payye

Music Review (Hindi) : Happy Ending

Music Review (Hindi) : Happy Ending
Music Composer: Sachin-Jigar

Happy ending opens with  Mileya Mileya, breezy with jazz led instrumentation in the classy vocals of Rekha Baharadwaj in contrast with Priya andrews vocals ably supported by composer Jigar itself. Solo saxophone in the interludes are brilliant enough to make this an enticing listen. Rekha's voice for this duet is the core highlight of this song. Paaji Tussi such a pussy cat with its hilarious Amitabh bhattacharya lyrics and trumpet led brass orchestration along with alluring strings in the interludes is a funky listen in the lines of Sachin-Jigar's wacky fun filled songs.

Composer rehashes their D for Dopidi telugu song for the duet Jaise Mera Tu here again with whispery Priya Saraiah vocals supported by contemporary composer's favourite Arijith singh (loved the humming part in the second interlude). Duo delivered the brilliant accordion/harmonium led orchestration with heavy brass drums created the wonderful ambience. Again duo entered their dominion with party song G Phaad ke which is enough punchy to scorch the dance floors in every party. Divya Kumar and Shefali Alvares delivered enthusiastically with their thumping vocals. Khamma Gaani rides mainly on the Papon's soothing voice backed by Smitha and Vidhi. Composer duo arranges the instruments with breezy guitars and soft drumming to support papon's laid back singing. Haseena Tu Kameena mein, works mainly because of lead vocals especially Siddharth basru, Rahul Pandey and Shruthi pathak. Duo adorned this peppy tune with whistles and saxophone in the first and second interludes respectively.

Verdict: Sachin Jigar came with a fun filled, peppy album after the string of middling works in 2014.

My rating: 8/10

Music Review (Malayalam): Iyobinte Pusthakam

Music Review (Malayalam): Iyobinte Pusthakam
Music Composer: Neha S Nair & Yakzan Gary Periara

Maane, folk based fusion song starts with accordion sound and well handled cajon percussions. Neha S Nair and Anil Ram contrived an aura necessary for the folky song with their vocals. Short time Sarangi touch in the first interlude and guitar backed orchestration adds value to the song. Raave, released as single previously has Haricharan and again Neha S Nair in their best in vocals for this romantic duet picturised in an enthralling way with sea as a backdrop. Again in the arrangements cajon by Tao issaro stands out for his off beat work ably supported by violins and flute. Theeyattam is an amalgamation between folky raw vocals by Amala C and arabic rap portions by Walid Bensalim. Neha Nair did a cameo in the middle with her breezy vocals. The arrangements too quite eccentric in its own way with melange of instruments led by percussions resulted in creating uncommon sounds.

Verdict: Amal Neerad association for the full feature film with Neha S Nair and Yakzan Gary Periara is totally endearing album despite being short soundtrack.

My rating: 8.5/10

Music Review (Indipop) : Andholan

Music Review (Indipop) : Andholan
Music Composer: Mekaal Hasan Band

Bheem, with its melodious starting flute by Papu digressed into heavy guitar in the mid way. The lovely combination of guitar and flute towards the ending of first interlude deserves a special mention and Sharmistha chaterjee delivers the classical raga brilliantly. Next comes Champakali eponym of the wonderful classical raga and the lady aces it.The 40 second flute portions (2:50 to 3:30) in the middle and towards the end garnished with sudden outburst of guitar riffs makes this an enticing listen in an album. In an adaptation of Baba Bulle shah's sufi poetry Gunghat again Papu's flute and Mekaal's guitar is the show stealer. This 5 minute long song has guitar riffs continuosly flows in tandem with Sharmistha's vocals. In Kinarey Sharmistha takes full control over the enchanting tune and arrangements are minimal with paced down flute to fabricate the wonderful ambience. Nearly 7 minute long Maalkauns based on the Raga Malkauns dominated with thumping guitar and some captivating flute portions is a captivating listen. The coordination between flute and guitar portions are top-notch results in the well conceived blissful song. Megh too one of the best sung songs in the album by Sharmistha with neatly done concoction of flue, guitar and drums in arrangement. Sayon, with enthusiastic start is a slow and poignant melody handled deftly by Sharmistha and supported by splendid Papu's flute solos. Catchy guitar portions throughout the song in the background is an addictive touch to the song. Sindhi, shortest song in the whole album where Sharmistha, Mekaal and Papu is in impressive form especially Mekaal churning out inventive guitar solos.

Verdict: Mekaal Hasaan band delivers extremely pleasant third album with new vocalist Sharmistha. Surely must listen Indipop Album.

Pick of the Album: Whole Album

P.S: I don't want to rate this album and disparage the wonderful work by comparing with other album reviews in my blog.Just soak yourself into the musical world created with minimal instruments (guitar, flute and drums) by Mekaal Hasaan. Surely this album will make you listen to other works done by this band.

Music Review (Hindi) : Kill Dil

Music Review (Hindi) : Kill Dil
Music Composer: Shankar- Ehsaan- Loy

Kill Dil starts with Gulzar reciting his verses and SEL seemed like channelised his inner tarantino sounds with brilliant whistles, wah wah sounds along with classy brass led orchestration. Shankar Mahadevan and Sonu nigam delivered with enthusiastic vocal variations especially towards the end  results in a kickass song in the soundtrack. Happy Budday despite vivacious singing by Sukhwinder Singh and Shankar Mahadevan tune is very much average. However certain nifty touches in the orchestration in prelude like sitar and rocky guitar in the end draw attention.

Next song Sajde which again starts in Gulzar voice is hummable melody with classical touches handled well by both lead singers Arijith Singh and Nihira joshi. The melodius portions of the song has some deja-vu feeling associated with it which is easily overcomed by sprightly transition in rendering the sajde phrase every time. Bol Boleyia is a typical punjabi folk song with the line of singers Siddharth Mahadevan, Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan with some interesting sounds. Sweeta has interesting violin in the start with Adnan Sami delivering the classical 80's tune in deftly manner. Only apprehension is song ends within two minutes. Daiyya Maiyya with the bunch of singers Udit Narayanan, Shankar Mahadevan, Rasika Chandrasekhar,Javaad Jaferi has some interesting tune in Rasika's vocals and the song shifts quite radically without any flow results in some parts works while others don't. Baawara, endearing tune with enticing arrangements in the hands of Shankar Mahadevan who aces both classical portions and also rock elements. Nihira Joshi ably supports him well with her vocals. Especially Shankar Mahadevan is brilliant in second interlude with his classical touches and flute portions are tandem with his rendition. Nakhriley is a 80's tune which offers nothing offbeat except for the likeable portions by Shankar Mahadevan and becomes the weakest song in the soundtrack.

Verdict: SEL returns with the stellar soundtrack for Kill Dil and offers a lot of variety in songs.

My Rating: 8.5/10

Pick of the album: Baawara, Kill Dil, Sajde

Music Review (Telugu) : Dikkulu Choodaku Ramayya

Music Review (Telugu) : Dikkulu Choodaku Ramayya
Music Composer : M M Keeravani

Dintana, starts off with Deja-vu feeling but Rahul Sipligunj with his verve in singing and eccentric vocals along with the chorus repeating the witty lyrics in the charanam portions of the song makes this song enjoyable. In Chembistri, Keeravani extends those off-beat vocals of Revanth similar to the previous song along with motley of interesting sounds with catchy percussions. Ramya Behra aces the unconventional song with enticing sounds by keeravani and she is particularly brilliant in the high pitch portions and Telipotuna hook variations. Easily one can think Anthe premanthe as a sad song by listening to violin and veena portions in the prelude but Keeravani averted the mood of the song with punchy percussions and energetic singing by KK Bhairava. Composer interlaced Mohana vocals with male lead in prominent way. Ramesh Vinayakam sounds wonderful for the simple and beautiful folk tune Andari Rathalu. Flute, nadhaswaram and quirky sounds by Yamini stands apart in this track. Finally title song is an average tune with heavy percussions compared to other songs in the soundtrack despite sprightly singing by Kalpana.

Verdict: Keeravani's composition still sounds vibrant and gives tough competition to young composers.Enjoyable album from veteran in his own unique way.

My rating: 8/10

Pick of the Album: Anthe Premanthe, Telipotuna, Dintana

Music Review: Raunaq (Indian Album)

Music Review: Raunaq (Indian Album)
Music Composer: A R Rahman

In Laadli, Lata Mangeshkar's age factor is quite apparent in her vocals and Rahman uses her voice minimal, giving the simple yet beautiful classic portions to the chorus. Rahman enters into the foray with his high pitched singing and usage of mild tabla throughout the song accentuates well with the flow of the song. Kho Jaayein Hum is a recitation of Kapil SIbal's poetry by Shweta pandit and Jyoti and Rahman uses the minimal orchestration prevailed by vocals.

Geet Gaaon, a somber melody adorned with Jazz flavored orchestration by Jonita Gandhi is an exciting listen. Particularly usage of sitar in the interludes and minimal strings throughout the song blends perfectly with Jonita's breezy vocals. Jonita gandhi is getting similar type of songs from Rahman but not a problem though. Aabhi Jaa, another song with a soulful rendition by Jonita gandhi orchestrated beautifully with flute in the prelude, mandolin in the middle followed by percussions and sweeping strings towards the end. K S Chitra joined with A R Rahman after a long gap for Sach Kahoon and she sounds so enticing as always for the simple pleasant filmy tune. Khatta meeta rides high on the punchy chorus along with brilliant usage of strings is an excellently arranged song in Mohith chauhan's vocals. Kismat se, fairly ordinary tune works because of Shreya goshal's singing and some nice touches in the orchestration by Rahman results in average track in the whole album.

Verdict: Raunaq is a filmy album with nice compostions by A R Rahman but lacks enough punch for multiple listens

My Rating:7.5/10

Pick of the Album: Sach Kahoon, Aabhi Jaa, Laadli
